Q: What is the process of wisdom teeth removal?
A: It depends upon the position of the tooth. In some cases, the tooth is out of the gums, grown partially and abnormally. In this case, it will be extracted like any other tooth. But if the tooth has not penetrated the gums, it may require a small surgery to reach to the tooth.
Q: Will it be performed under anesthesia or normally?
A: It depends on your personal choice whether you want to be awake during the process or not. If you are very anxious about the process, the dentist may give you some anti-anxiety drugs so that you fall asleep but if you don’t want to be asleep, the doctor may give you local anesthesia and perform the surgery by keeping the part to be operated numb.
Q: What will be the after effects of the extraction?
A: Immediately after the surgery, bleeding is normal. Less often, swelling and numbness of the face or lips also occurs but it is temporary and can be controlled by applying ice to the area. The dentist may give you some medicines like pain killers and antibiotics so that occurrence of infection is prevented. You can eat normally like before but you should avoid hard foods. After a few days, you will be able to eat anything.
Q: What will be the cost of wisdom teeth removal?
A: The cost of the extraction may range anywhere from $100 to $350 depending upon which procedure is applied. This will be the cost of just the surgery. Other costs that are added to it are cost of anesthesia, X-ray and medications. It depends upon many things like the condition of the tooth whether it is normal or impacted, is anesthesia required and the experience of the surgeon. If you have a dental insurance, a part of the expenses will be paid by the dental insurance company.
